November 2017
LinkedIn rolled out a new salary feature about one year ago, though not many people seem to know about it yet. The feature started in the US, UK, and Canada with plans to widen it globally during 2017. You can access it here. LinkedIn is trying to gather and share salary information to help you make better career decisions. They recognize that it can be hard to gather reliable data when salaries are not a commonly open topic of discussion.
If you give the system your salary (with assurances it will not be displayed on your profile and will remain private), they offer you access to these insights for free for one year. If you are a premium member, you will have access to this data without having to share your salary. The system asks for your location, title and years of experience in order to place the data in context.
The system is new and will only get more powerful as people share their salary information. As an example, I looked up Career Consultant in Annapolis. Likely there was not enough data for that city and title so the results displayed were broader (in fairness this happens on other salary sites too). The results showed a range of $32,000 to $70,000 in annual terms for a Career Consultant in the US. For other roles and salaries in Baltimore, their data suggests that a Director of Career Services makes about $72,000 while Career Counselors and Career Coaches each make about $52,000/year.
I’m mentioning this feature because managing your salary is a huge part of managing your career. It’s important to know what you’re worth, and what the market is paying for your skills in order to maximize your earning potential. Check out the data for your profession and see what you find.
